Here is a way of looking at the breakdown of tasks by job.
In the example department we can see six specific tasks for the representative job for the Transfer Press Operator. Monitor press, unload and stack parts, clean-up with broom, clean-up with air wand, lunch and scheduled breaks.
Once the tasks are defined, the final step is to take sound level measurements in the hearing zone of the worker as each of the activities is performed. Typically this involves measurement over several repeated occurrences of each activity. Measurements are taken with an integrating sound level meter for durations ranging from several seconds to a few minutes. Dosimeters may be more practical for longer activities or where worker movement makes it difficult for the surveyor to maintain the microphone in the worker's hearing zone.
