JAA staff has been busy taking hearing
loss prevention training and education on the road.
 | Robert Anderson conducted a workshop on
"Noise Control Awareness - Maintaining the Noise Control Process" at the UAW/GM
Annual Health & Safety Conference in Palm Springs, CA last January. The workshop
focused on noise control concepts and techniques that can be adopted by the maintenance
workforce as standard practices. He also addressed UAW staff at their Black Lake
training facility on the same topic in April.

Society conference in November. His
presentation there included an update on issues other than compliance related to hearing
health and hearing ability in the workplace, like communication, hearing protection,
localization, and ototoxicity. Hager reprised his MIHS presentation for the Michigan
Safety Conference in April, and will present at the Ohio Safety Day in June in Toledo.
 | Tim Soule worked closely with Tom Kakos and
Pat Brogan of Ford's Industrial Hygiene Staff on a presentation for the UAW/Ford National
Joint Committee in Las Vegas. Their primary emphasis was implementation of Ford's
noise level specification for new and rebuilt equipment. Soule and |

Kakos constructed a "machine" of
fiberboard with simulated machine noise generated from a custom-made CD reflecting
variable noise conditions. The project enabled workshop participants to get a
"hands-on" experience with measurement locations and the measurement equipment
necessary to ensure compliance with Ford's sound level specification.
JAA staff is available to assist with these and other training topics related to noise and
hearing. Contact Lee Hager at AIHCE Booth 1746, phone 517-349-8066, fax
