AIHCE Hosts Noise Presentations

The American Industrial Hygiene Association has announced plans for their annual conference, to be held May 9-15 in Atlanta.  Noise related offerings include:

bulletProfessional Development Courses on Noise Control Engineering, Human Vibration Exposure, Key Topics in Hearing Conservation, Noise Exposure Measurement, and Preventing and Dealing with Claims for Noise-Induced Hearing Loss,
bulletA Technical Platform Session on Monday, May 11 with new research on Hearing Conservation Program Management, Exposure Assessment, and Protective Issues,

How are you doing in your hearing conservation efforts?

We asked several questions in the survey about hearing conservation program effectiveness and the general perception of program efficacy.  Questions and responses

Earlier this year, we asked people who receive The Noise Monitor to complete a short fax-back survey about several aspects of their hearing conservation programs.  In addition, copies of the fax-back survey were distributed at the annual conference of the National Hearing Conservation Association (see related story on page 5).  Survey results have been compiled, and are presented here.

Who responded?

We asked respondents to indicate their profession.

NIOSH Controls Workshop Sets Noise Agenda for 21st Century

One of the issues addressed at the Workplace Controls Workshop, co-sponsored on March 10-12, 1998 by NIOSH, AIHA, and ASSE, was the unfinished business of noise control.  Session participants interacted with invited speakers and with each other on the State of the Art and Unfinished Business; Emerging Technologies; and Protective Equipment.

Noise Workshop Findings

The consensus of the workshop participants was that the existing hearing conservation paradigm has failed.  Data to date show hearing loss is progressing at a higher rate than we would expect if existing programs were effective.  OSHA's lack of enforcement on hearing related issues and lack of a grass-roots

awareness effort has resulted in a significant portion of US industry (over 90% of small and medium sized businesses per the NOES study) not undertaking any appreciable hearing conservation effort at all.  Existing, proven technology is readily available to control exposure to hazardous noise, but is not widely implemented.  Workshop participants focused on the
